Montford Historical Kitchen

The owners of a Craftsman Style beauty in a historic district of Asheville were not satisfied with the choices that the builder had made in their kitchen. The kitchen itself seemed like an afterthought to the rest of the spacious house and was more suited to 1800s living – tucked into the back corner of the house, away from the rest of the living areas, with a poor layout, horrible lighting, and minimal counter space for working.

Choices for the new kitchen were balanced between the past and the present, with small details added, giving a nod to the past. First, a stairway bisecting the kitchen and living/dining space was opened to provide better sight lines and natural light. Next, the layout was reconfigured, enabling more working counter space and a better work triangle.

A combination of painted and stained maple cabinets with brass accents gave the appearance of inset doors and handcrafted furniture found in historic homes. The paint color chosen was Sherwin Williams – Rookwood Shutter Green from the Historic Collection.

Spectrum Quartz Impeccable countertops with gold veining were chosen to meld with the Brass accents. The owners now love to work in their kitchen rather than dread it.

“We chose Align Design for a total Kitchen renovation and two bathrooms, including our primary bath. We are thrilled with the results! Shawn spent a lot of time up front, understanding our lifestyle, design styles, and needs/wishes for these projects, before developing any design ideas. Her process resulted in very targeted and insightful designs.

“These new spaces are both incredibly functional and beautiful. Her suggested choices for design elements, color choices, materials, and accessories are items we could never have found on our own. She also designed in many useful and clever touches for both the kitchen and bath, which really raised the design to a higher level. Easy to work with and very attentive to our needs, we'd recommend Align Design to anyone looking to refresh or renovate their spaces.”
